Context

Here at NCAD we have been responsible since 1983 for pioneering design history as a highly successful undergraduate course with an unchallenged national reputation. This programme is able to offer not only the expertise of our staff, but also design practitioners and visiting scholars from a range of different institutional backgrounds.

Our Library (established c. 1900) and its incorporated National Irish Visual Arts Library (NIVAL) offer unique resources for research and documentation unavailable elsewhere. We have an ongoing commitment to the development of design history and material culture as key areas of national and international research collaboration.

Alongside the design and ephemera collections held by NIVAL, housed on site at NCAD, students are also encouraged to take advantage of our long-term relationships with institutions such as the National Museum of Ireland and the National Library of Ireland as part of their studies.
